about us Green Bean Kids Ltd is a New Zealand company, founded by twin sisters Angela Mead and Meredith Barry-Walsh in 2007. We were inspired to create a baby wear collection that combined beautiful organic and sustainable fabrics with contemporary styling for babies and children up to 3 years.
We wanted to create a collection of baby wear that was super soft, beautifully styled and was good for babies and the environment. At Green we are always researching new and innovative sustainable fabrics. Currently we are manufacture from organic cotton, bamboo and organic cotton / bamboo blend fabrics.
We have chosen organic cotton because it is grown organically without the use of pesticides, fertilisers or GMO's. The organic cotton that we use in our collections is Global Organic Textile Standards GOTS (certified throughout the supply chain. This means that not only are the fibres are certified but the fabric is GOTS certified at the end processing stage, dyeing and finishing. We also use silky soft rayon from bamboo in our collections. We sourced a variety of sustainable fabrics for the collection and were immediately taken with bamboo. This amazing fibre is just so soft it has the feel of silk, is as smooth as satin with the same luxurious sheen. The softness is due to the fact that its fibres are naturally smooth and round with no tiny spurs which in wool and hemp can irritate the skin. This makes the fabric an ideal choice for your baby Bamboo is a regenererated cellulose made from the inner pith and leaves of the bamboo. The bamboo is extracted in a similiar process to other rayon fibres. Rayon is a fabric that is made from the natural materials of wood based products such as beech trees, (tencel and modal) euclyptus tress, hemlock and recently bamboo. The soft rayon from bamboo fabric that we use is Oeko-Tex 100 certified for the fibre and Oeko-Tex 100 certified for the finished fabric. Oeko-Tex certification is an assurance that the fabric has been tested for over 100 chemicals and is safe you baby. We also selected bamboo for its environmental qualities.Bamboo is a renewable resource it grows rapidly (up to 1 metre each day), matures in 3 years, requires less space to grow for an equivalent yield, captures 5 times the volume of greenhouse gases as an equivalent stand of timber trees, release 30% more oxygen and its root system retains water and stabilises the soil (e.g. river banks), reducing water pollution. We have chosen bamboo because it is silky soft, non irritating, highly absorbent and moisture wicking. The raw bamboo is certified organic by the OCIA Organic Crop Improvemnat Assocaitaion and NOP National Organic Programme. The bamboo we use in our collection is grown sustainably and has FSC Forest stewardship Council field of chain certification for the bamboo pulp. Our bamboo/ organic cotton blend denim is exclusive to Green Bean Kids. We have worked with our fabric mill to produce a super soft yet robust denim for little ones. All our garments are manufactured exclusively in New Zealand and are incredibly well made.
